Matt Patricia’s Defense Sends a Message in 56-3 Season-Opening Rout of Ball State

Matt Patricia's Defense Sends a Message in 56-3 Season-Opening Rout of Ball State
Matt Patricia’s Defense Sends a Message in 56-3 Season-Opening Rout of Ball State

Ohio State’s 2026 season began the way Matt Patricia has spent the last year building toward: with a defense that simply refused to let Ball State into the game. In front of a sold-out crowd at Ohio Stadium on Sept. 5, the No. 1 Buckeyes needed less than a half to answer the only real question left heading into 2026: could this defense, rebuilt for the second straight season, still look like an Ohio State defense? The answer arrived at 56-3.

Ball State managed just 165 total yards, 120 through the air and 45 on the ground, figures that told the story of the afternoon. The Cardinals didn’t score until a 54-yard field goal with 1:17 left in the first half, and they finished the day converting just 3 of 14 third downs, a number that says everything about how little room Patricia’s defense left to operate.

A Rebuild That Doesn’t Miss a Beat

Matt Patricia and his staff spent the offseason replacing eight starters for the second year in a row, a rebuild most coordinators would use as an excuse. Instead, the season opener looked like confirmation that the standard hasn’t moved. Ohio State’s defensive front recorded seven tackles for loss totaling 19 yards and a sack, with sophomore Epi Sitanilei getting home behind a pass rush that hurried Ball State quarterback Keldric Luster into a series of uncomfortable decisions.

One of those decisions turned into the defining defensive play of the afternoon. After freshman defensive end Khary Wilder, working reps at both tackle and end, forced Luster off his spot early in the second quarter, linebacker TJ Alford stepped in front of the throw for an interception that flipped field position and the game’s entire tone. It was the kind of disruptive, cause-and-effect defensive football Matt Patricia has talked about building since he arrived in Columbus, pressure up front translating directly into takeaways on the back end.

Riley Pettijohn led all Ohio State defenders with six tackles, further evidence that the Buckeyes’ retooled linebacker corps is ready to carry real weight in 2026. Pettijohn and Alford, both still early in their careers, played significant snaps alongside a linebacker room that lost Sonny Styles and Arvell Reese to the NFL draft, and neither looked like a player just holding a spot.

None of this should have been a total surprise. This defense has now finished a season ranked No. 1 nationally in back-to-back years, run first by Jim Knowles and now by Matt Patricia. What made the Ball State performance notable wasn’t just the shutout of the end zone, it was how the Buckeyes got there. Patricia has talked openly about wanting a defense built on collective strength rather than a single dominant star, and the opener bore that out: four different position groups contributed winning plays, from Sitanilei’s sack to Wilder’s pressure to Alford’s interception to Pettijohn’s tackle total.

Saving Something for Texas

There’s also a version of this game that matters more for what didn’t happen. Ball State likes to attack with motion and misdirection, and by multiple accounts, that’s part of why Patricia held back a portion of his defensive fronts and blitz packages, unwilling to tip his full hand a week before a far tougher test on the road against Texas. One broadcast observation during the game put it bluntly: Patricia “didn’t look interested in showing Texas much they could plan for.” If that’s accurate, Saturday’s shutout wasn’t even Ohio State’s full hand.

For a defense replacing eight starters for the second consecutive year, that’s a luxury. It also happens to be exactly the kind of quiet confidence Matt Patricia has tried to instill in Columbus since the day he walked into the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. One game into the season, his group already looks like it’s speaking the same language he is.
